Curatorial Adviser development programme

Curatorial advisers are museum professionals who work on a voluntary basis with small independent museums to advise them on developing and managing their museum, and particularly on collections management and curatorial issues.  The network of curatorial advisers is well established and managed by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council.

Yorkshire's adviser network is co-ordinated by Renaissance Yorkshire, who commissioned Emma together with Alison Bodley to do some research into advisers' professional development needs, identify gaps and make recommendations for how advisers could be supported more effectively. The research included an online survey, a series of interviews and a discussion forum which identified clear priority areas for further development.  These ideas were explored further at a regional Curatorial Advisers' Conference in York on 6 December 2009.  Renaissance Yorkshire are now using the findings from the report to shape their future support for Curatorial Advisers.
