History and Memory

I'm currently working with the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds on a EU-funded partnership project exploring the concept of historical memory in adult learning. I co-manage the project with oral historian Tracy Craggs. We've recently finished running a 10-week course for adult learners on the history and memory of the First World War to test an EU-wide methodology being developed by the partnership which includes colleagues from Spain, Cyprus, Poland, Slovenia and Italy. This is our adult learning group at Prince Henry's Grammar School in Otley, which has hosted the course.

There's more on the EU partnership at http://kc-mem.eu and our project blog for the adult learning course at http://blog.royalarmouries.org/. The project follows on from a successful project to create a methodology for working with historical memory in secondary schools. I've summarised that project here and blogged about the concept of historical memory and its relevance to museums here and here

Our next task is to review the evaluation feedback from all the partners and work on a final version of the project methodology that takes everyone's experiences into account. Tracy and I are leading on that work package so we have a lot of work to do over the next couple of months. We are aiming to launch the final methodology at a conference on adult learning in the cultural sector at the Royal Armouries Museum in November 2015. I'll post details of the conference, and the call for papers, as soon as I can.
