The Tower of London. Palace, or prison? Focus of power, or symbol of oppression?
Museum educators and interpreters frequently find themselves facing up to difficult and challenging aspects of history, and having to make decisions about how - or whether - to tackle them. How do we deal with the sometimes conflicting demands of different audiences, or with issues that still arouse strong opinions in the present day? Do we face tricky moral and ethical issues head on, or is it safer to avoid them? And how do we negotiate our responsibilities as custodians of the public face of history?
Emma is currently participating in a CPD course that has these questions at its heart. Hosted at the Tower of London and led by staff from MLA London and the Imperial War Museum, the course brings together practitioners involved in dealing with such issues and aims to help them find ways of steering through largely uncharted waters.
