GEM Conference

This year's Group for Education in Museums conference is themed 'Thinking Ahead and Staying Afloat' - a timely and relevant theme in the current climate of cuts to museum services and new ways of working. I'm looking forward to some interesting discussions with colleagues at the forefront of museum learning in the UK and overseas. GEM is a network open to anyone interested in learning through museums and heritage.

I'm running a workshop about 'Working with Contractors' on Tuesday morning with fellow GEM Trustee Nick Winterbotham. We're planning an interactive, discussion-based session aimed at getting delegates to share their experiences and come up with best practice suggestions on working effectively with contractors and avoiding the common but tricky-to-manage pitfalls.  My colleague Ali Bodley is also running a practical pre-conference workshop about the practicalities of working with consultants - covering issues such as writing a brief, recruiting the right person and managing them effectively - on Monday afternoon. The session is based on the training day Ali and I ran for GEM back in June. See my recent blog posts for a discussion on some of the issues we covered.

The conference takes place from 6-8 September at Dunstan Hall in Norwich. Hope to see you there!
