Prince2 exam success!

Prince2 is a way of managing projects. The acronym stands for 'Projects in Controlled Environments' and it's an international standard of management endorsed by the UK government and used widely across the corporate sector.

I am really pleased to have passed the Prince2 course and gained accredited status after a tough week-long training programme that involved classroom study, homework and two exams. I got 95% in the foundation exam and 85% at practitioner level - not bad for someone who last took an exam in 1995!

Prince2 is not widely used in the cultural sector but is becoming more popular, in recognition that creative projects still need to be managed with rigour and care in order to be successful.  I've been managing projects for years and in common with many cultural sector professionals my training has been ad hoc, often involving learning through experience.  I've generally subscribed to the view that project management is just organised common sense. However, once I'd got over my fear at the amount of terminology and structure involved in Prince2 I've become a convert.  I've learnt a huge amount from this method about how to manage my workload more effectively (many of the techniques are transferable to other areas of work) and I'm certain that having a set of tried and tested processes and methods at my fingertips will enable me to be a better project manager for clients in the future.

Do talk to me if you're interested in using the Prince2 approach in your own organisation, or if you'd just like an informal chat about how you could manage your projects more efficiently.
