The Gurkha Museum

The Gurkha Museum

I'm working with York-based museum design studio PLB Projects on a new vision for The Gurkha Museum in Winchester as part of a stage 2 bid to the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The bid, if successful, will form core funding for a complete redisplay of the museum's permanent galleries and I'm currently working with the museum and the team at PLB to consult stakeholders and develop proposals for the new displays.

It's a complex project for many reasons. The Brigade of Gurkhas has a 200-year history with the UK and has its origins in Empire, so we are tackling a complex and often contested history in the context of a regimental museum. We need to interpret this history for a family audience as well as meeting the needs of the military famly and the Nepali diaspora in the UK. The consultation process has been fascinating - it was a privilege to visit the Gurkha Training Company at Catterick recently and talk to serving officers about their ethos and culture and how they would like that to be represented in the new exhibitions. It's brilliant to see the designs taking shape, guided by insight from our consultations and the work of the Activity Planning consultants who are doing a brilliant job. The bid will be submitted later in 2024.
